Barely 24 hours after the death of global superstar Olivia Newton-John was announced Monday (August 8), fans of the legendary singer have turned to digital download and streaming platforms for consolation.
Although the occurrence is far from atypical after the reports of the passing of a beloved musician, Newton-John’s catalog – unlike some – is seeing several entries dominate real-time global and U.S. iTunes charts with hits that are older than most of the acts she’s bypassing.
Bumping the likes of Beyonce, BTS, and a host of other current hitmakers aside in her blast to the top of sales tallies, look inside to see which Olivia hits are gaining the most traction.
With over 100 million records sold worldwide, the Australian diva already sat in record books as one of the best-selling female artists of all time. Now, her already-legendary stats will gain even more ground thanks to large spikes in digital sales and streaming activity.
As of time reported, peruse of the real-time U.S. iTunes sales chart reveals Olivia occupies seven of the top 10 positions alone. Among the entries are her Hot 100 #1 hits ‘You’re the One That I Want,’ ‘Have You Never Been Mellow,’ and ‘Physical.’
Other standouts include her signature hit, ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You,’ which has taken the top spot. The song – which peaked at #3 on the U.S. Pop charts in 1978 – could re-enter the Hot 100 once the current sales tracking week ends when all other elements are considered (i.e. increased radio airplay, boosts in streams, etc.).

Many of the same songs have gained traction on the global iTunes chart as well as Olivia occupies 5 of the top 10 spots there.
Because this heightened activity started early in the tracking week, it’s likely at least one of her songs will appear on the refreshed Hot 100.
We’ll find out Monday (August 15) which, if any, of her legendary hits re-enter the tally.
